Michael Jackson Doctor Pleads Not Guilty To Involuntary Manslaughter

Conrad Murray's trial slated to start March 28.

Michael Jackson's former personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray entered a plea of not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the pop star at his arraignment on Tuesday morning (January 25).

According to the Los Angeles Times, when asked by judge Michael Pastor how he pleaded to the charge, Murray said, "Your honor, I am an innocent man." When Pastor interrupted and asked Murray what his plea was, the cardiologist said, "Therefore, I plead not guilty."

The brief hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court ended with Pastor setting a March 28 date for the start of a trial in the case. Murray faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted, and the Times noted that he surprised the judge by invoking his right to a speedy trial, which meant the case would have to begin by late March. Pastor noted the rarity of a defendant asking to have a speedy trial, then set jury selection for the week of March 28 and said he was inclined to allow television coverage of the trial that the defense expects will last two months.

Lawyers for Murray have maintained his innocence all along, saying he did not do anything that "should have" caused the 50-year-old pop icon's death. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office determined that Jackson died of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol mixed with a cocktail of other sedatives.

Murray has admitted to administering propofol to Jackson in the hours before the singer's death, but the defense appears to be gearing up to claim that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of the drug after he woke in a panic from a fitful night of sleep.

During a preliminary hearing earlier this month to determine if there was enough evidence to hold Murray over for trial, the physician's attorneys said that there was evidence Jackson injected or drank a fatal amount of the drug when the doctor was not looking.

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray's Trial To Be Televised

Judge rules that camera will be allowed in the courtroom for manslaughter case.
By Gil Kaufman

For what promises to be one of the most bizarre and riveting legal proceedings in years, a Los Angeles judge ruled on Monday that a television camera will be allowed in the courtroom when Michael Jackson's doctor goes on trial for involuntary manslaughter.

Reuters reported that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, approved the presence of a camera in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray as long as it does not interfere with the proceedings in the closely watched case.

The judge asked for the "absolute least-intrusive placement" of a TV camera in the courtroom, but blocked cameras from documenting jury selection.

Pastor also announced that he would bump up the opening date of the trail by four days to March 24, at which point jury selection will begin. Murray, who faces up to four years in prison if convicted, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the trial is expected to last around six weeks.

Cardiologist Murray was hired to be Jackson's personal physician in the run-up to the King of Pop's planned 50-date comeback series of shows at London's O2 arena in the summer of 2009. The doctor told police that he provided Jackson, 50, with sedatives and the surgical anesthetic propofol in order to combat the singer's chronic insomnia. He said he did so on the morning of June 25, 2009, when Jackson died of what a coroner deemed acute propofol poisoning.

TMZ reported on Tuesday (February 8) that Murray's lawyers plan to argue that Jackson was already in weak health before he died and that it's unfair to blame propofol for his passing. Unnamed sources close to the case told the gossip site that at the time of his death, Jackson's body was already failing him in part because concert promoter AEG Live had "driven [him] over the edge" with a rigorous rehearsal schedule for the shows.

Murray's lawyers reportedly plan to call witnesses to say that Jackson was not showing up for rehearsals and when he did he showed "clear signs" of frail health. They also reportedly plan to argue that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of propofol to himself while Murray was out of the room.

Newspaper thinktank predicted the iPad in 1994

It's not often (well, ever) that I consider the possibility someone might be from the future, but maybe Roger Fidler was. In 2007 the Paleofuture blog pointed to the video below, where Fidler and his team at Knight-Ridder describe an electronic newspaper running on what might as well be an iPad... except that the video was made way back in 1994.

Most futurists are off the mark, or make forecasts for technologies that are so far off in the future, you'll never know if they are right, but the Knight-Ridder team's predictions for the "electronic tablet" were just eerie. Granted, they forecast it for the turn of the century -- and in their version of the future, people still wore collarless denim shirts -- but it's otherwise freakishly accurate.

"We may still use computers to create information, but we will use the tablet to interact with print, video and other information," the video explains. It also goes on to describe personal "profile pages," "interactive maps" and sharing links with friends. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. It even seems like Fidler is channeling Steve Jobs at some points, saying "Nobody needs a manual for their daily newspaper" and that tablet newspapers need to be kept simple. Amazingly, he even seems to describe iAds.

Of course, the Knight-Ridder tablet wasn't the first futurist's take on a pad-shaped newsreader, but at least this one doesn't also come with a neurotic killer computer in space.

If you were watching this video in 1994, you were watching 13 minutes of the future. Read on to see the clip. Bonus points to Fidler & co. for the classic PowerBook Duo, Newton and other Apple history in the background.

Oh take me away
I?ll be your passenger
I?m coming after yer
How does it feel?
How does it feel?

Gotta leave find a way out of here
Suddenly everything seems so clear
Find a place to run away
I can feel a change in me today

Fly away with me revive me from this dream
I?m drifting away
Throw a lifeline in to save me from the place I?m in
Oh please take me away

Floating in space
Such a beautiful place
Stars shining over me
How does it feel?
How does it feel?

See the world opening up for me
Free from your reality
Find a place to run away
I can feel a change in me today

Fly away with me revive me from this dream
I?m drifting away
Throw a lifeline in to save me
Cos I don?t want to sleep
I?m drifting away
Life is blinding me remind me how I used to be

Oh please take me away
Take me away

Apple scraps iOS-like slider tabs in latest Mac OS X Lion build

Hear that? It's a big sigh of relief from Mac users everywhere. In the latest Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Preview Developer Build, Apple has scrapped the switch/slider tabs that were borrowed UI elements from iOS.

As you can see from the image above, Apple has chosen to move away from the Aqua interface of Snow Leopard (and previous versions of OS X) and moved towards a more toned-down appearance. When Lion Developer Preview 2 was released, Apple replaced aqua tabs with slider tabs. For example, in the second tab bar above, when the user clicked on "General" the white tab over "Privacy" would slide over to "General." This UI element can be found in many app settings in iOS (think of the familiar "ON/OFF" switches).

Many developers felt the switch tabs were confusing for users, and it seems that Apple has listened to them. In the third build, Apple has gone back to the depressed tab functionality (the last tab bar in the image above). I guess Apple found out that just because something looks cool and works well in iOS doesn't necessarily mean the UI element should be translated to the desktop.

My Chemical Romance's 'Sing' Is 'Propaganda,' Glenn Beck Says

Fox News pundit singled out the song, performed on 'Glee' in February, during his broadcast Thursday.
By James Montgomery

Having apparently run out of things to terrify your parents (and your aunt in Arizona) with, conservative radio host/Fox News pundit Glenn Beck is now turning his attention to My Chemical Romance and their song "Sing," which he describes as "propaganda."

During Thursday's broadcast of his self-titled daily Fox News show, Beck — who in the past has vilified everyone from Barack Obama to "reform rabbis" — launched into an attack that was, at first, about the content of the TV show "Glee" (which he admitted he watched in "stunned horror and admiring awe"), but then quickly segued into a dissection of "Sing's" lyrics, which Beck read aloud with fervent terror.

"Pay attention to the lyrics," he cautioned. "This is propaganda ... it's an anthem saying 'Join us.' How can you and I possibly win against that?"

Beck was bringing up "Sing's" lyrics (which he attributed to "Chemical Romance") because, as he warned his viewers, our children "are not tethered to anything" and parents "have to be über vigilant" about the shows they watch, since "our whole culture right now is set up for you and the values you grew up on to lose."

"You don't have to live by the standards that society has set," he said. "You know what is right."

"Sing" was performed on an episode of "Glee" back in February, and My Chemical Romance has since reissued the song to raise money for the Red Cross' ongoing disaster relief efforts in Japan, in part because, as they told MTV News last week, they noticed their fans had begun using the lyrics to send messages of hope to the nation.

"We talked about something that we could do, and at first we were thinking about writing a new song to raise money for charity," MCR guitarist Ray Toro said. "And on Twitter, something we had seen was #SINGitforjapan, and it was kids starting this Twitter feed, writing messages of hope. And that really inspired us, and we just set to work, and after a couple weeks, we were able to pull this thing together."

A spokesperson for the band did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on Beck's statements, but in a tweet Thursday, Toro wrote simply, "Mission accomplished," and included a link to Beck's segment on the song. Guitarist Frank Iero was less polite, tweeting, "Yay! F--- that dude's face with Obama's birth certificate."

Bamboozle Festival Will Be 'Insanity,' 30 Seconds To Mars Say

Jared Leto and company are headlining the New Jersey fest Friday night and sharing the weekend with the likes of Lil Wayne and Mötley Crüe.
By James Montgomery

You'd think, given the worldwide tour in support of their This Is War album, that 30 Seconds to Mars would have logged at least a half-dozen New York City-area shows by this point. But you'd be wrong: To date, they've played exactly one NYC concert (an April 21, 2010, gig at Roseland Ballroom), which is just part of the reason they're looking forward to Friday night's (April 29) headlining slot at the Bamboozle Festival in nearby East Rutherford, New Jersey.

"Bamboozle is going to be insanity. I mean, insanity," frontman Jared Leto told MTV News during Thursday night's "30 Seconds to Mars: State of the Union" live stream. "We've only played one New York City-area show in this record cycle, so I think it's going to be madness."

30STM will share the weekend with an assortment of artists, including Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars, Wiz Khalifa, Mötley Crüe, Taking Back Sunday and the Gaslight Anthem, to name just a half-dozen. And, to hear 30 Seconds to Mars tell it, that's half the fun. Sure, they've been playing to sold-out arenas of their own fans for more than a year now, but nothing compares to the thrill — and the challenge — of trying to win over an audience of other people's fans.

"Nothing can really beat your own show, but festivals are really great too," guitarist Tomo Milicevic said. "At festivals, you play in front of other fans too."

The 2011 Bamboozle Festival takes over the New Meadowlands Stadium parking lot in East Rutherford, New Jersey, all weekend. MTV News will be on hand to bring you all the madness!

Which act would you most like to see at Bamboozle? Let us know in the comments!

'Moulin Rouge' Is 'One Of The Best Movies Of All Time,' Joe Jonas Says

Before MTV News' 'Moulin Rouge' live stream Monday at 3 p.m. ET, Jonas recalls working with director Baz Luhrmann on Broadway's 'La Boheme.'
By Jocelyn Vena

As we gear up for our "Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event" on Monday, we are remembering why the movie is so memorable a decade later.

Joe Jonas had the pleasure of working with the flick's director Baz Luhrmann back in 2003 as a member of the children's chorus in Luhrmann's Broadway production of Puccini's classic opera "La Boheme," and he has only the fondest memories of the experience.

"It was amazing," he told MTV News. "Funny story for you: I was in 'La Boheme,' [and] I remember being onstage and I didn't know what stage left or stage right was, and I was really confused, and he told me from the audience, he was like, 'All right, take a little bit to the stage left.'

"And I was really confused, and I was really embarrassed," he continued. "I didn't know what he was talking about. He literally walked up onstage and he acted like he was talking to me, and he whispered in my ear, like, 'Go a little bit to the left.' So, for me, the fact that a director would be so cool with me like that, from then on, I was so blown away that he was so cool."

Jonas, who has since gone on to superstardom and even starred in two successful TV musicals ("Camp Rock" and "Camp Rock 2") credits Luhrmann's forward-thinking vision in "Moulin Rouge" for pop culture's current obsession with the genre.

"I think he's an amazing director, and his credits are unbelievable," he said. " 'Moulin Rouge' is one of the best movies of all time, and there's no doubt in that. And I think it really has started a generation of music into TV [and] movies so openly."

MTV News will reunite Luhrmann, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor to celebrate "Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event" on Monday, May 2, at 3 p.m. ET on MTV.com. The director and stars will be joined by co-star John Leguizamo, who played artist Toulouse-Lautrec, and Catherine Martin, who won the Oscar for costume design and art direction. Hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz, the live stream will include special appearances and live interviews while looking back at how the film came to be and how its legacy continues to grow.

To get in on the fun, fans can submit questions for the "Moulin Rouge" director and talent via the @MTVNews Twitter handle with the hashtag #AskMoulin.

Samsung brings Apple patent suit to US soil

Last week Samsung countersued Apple in Korea, Japan and Germany for infringements on up to five Samsung patents. The countersuit came after Apple lobbed a massive suit against Samsung for copying the iPhone and iPad. Apple wasn't pulling any punches either. "It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging. This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas," a Cupertino spokesperson said.

Well, Samsung brought its patent infringement countersuit against Apple to the US yesterday. As Bloomberg reports, the new US suit expands the number of alleged patent infringements by Apple to 10. Among the alleged violations: a patent that covers improvements to text messages and their attachments, another that covers technology that allows a user to place a phone call and surf the Web at the same time, and another that allows for increased capacity of mobile networks.

How this is all going to play out is anyone's guess. All I can say with certainty is that this is a great time to be an IP lawyer.

Ne-Yo Defends Beyonce 'Dis' Statements

'I'm tired of being nice to dumb people. ... Bottom line, Beyonce is my friend,' 'Irreplaceable' songwriter tweets.
By Jocelyn Vena

When a comment from Ne-Yo hit the Internet in which the songwriter said that he wished he could have kept the Beyoncé hit "Irreplaceable" for himself, some took it as a dis to the star.

"One song that I gave away and didn't want to, but it's actually a good thing that I did, is Beyonce's 'Irreplaceable'. I honestly wrote that song for myself, but that song taught me a very interesting lesson: Many women don't think that differently. ... However, a man singing it comes across a little bit misogynistic, a little bit mean," Ne-Yo, who wrote the song, said in an interview.

When it was implied on Twitter that Ne-Yo was dissing the Sasha Fierce star with his comments, the singer/songwriter defended himself. "Aiight my dude. Send me the link to where I said ANYTHING disrespectful about Beyonce, PLEASE! Dying to hear this," he wrote. "Just heard the audio where I supposedly dissed Beyonce. ARE Y'ALL SERIOUS!?! Did y'all even listen to what I said!?!"

Ne-Yo then continued to tweet his anger toward those who misunderstood what he said. "I said I originally wrote the song for me. That's true, so OF COURSE I didn't want to give it away originally. IT WAS FOR ME," he wrote. "Once I realized how the song comes across if sung by a guy, that's when I decided to give it away. HOW IS THAT DISSING BEYONCE!?! She took the song and made it a smash, NOBODY can deny that ...

"You know what? At first I was apologetic about what the hacker said, now that I've heard the audio myself, not so much," he continued. "Y'all should listen a lil' harder before you start dissin' people. Makes you look real dumb. I'm tired of being nice to dumb people. ... Bottom line, Beyonce is my friend. To HELL with anybody that ain't SMART enough to understand what I truly meant."

Britney Spears 'Till The World Ends' Bollywood Remix Hits Web

The Femme Fatale singer takes to Twitter to encourage fans to 'check out this incredible ... remix.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Last week, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" got the Bollywood treatment when Indian composers Salim-Sulaiman remixed her feel-good disco track. Now, Britney Spears is feeling the Indian love from entertainment website Desi Hits! and the Culture Shock production team, who put their Bollywood-style spin on "Till the World Ends."

"Check out this incredible Desihits remix of Till The World Ends. I LOVE it!!!" Britney tweeted on Monday about the track.

The swirling take on Spears' hit tune boasts a "Punjabi breakdown" section that features some South Asian-sounding vocals from Culture Shock's Lomaticc and Sunny Brown. The track includes some added Desi flavors courtesy of dholki, dhol and tumbi beats, which are common in Indian music.

"Our goal was to take Britney's smash hit single and give fans a total Desi adrenaline rush," Culture Shock's Baba Kahn explained. "The result is a Culture Shock musical Desi roller coaster that hopefully everyone around the world will want to join."

It seems that Spears' camp was crucial in orchestrating the remix. "We wanted to build an even greater connection between the world's biggest pop star and one of the world's largest audiences," Mark Flaherty, senior vice president of Jive Label Group, says of the reimagined tune. "Britney has been engaged with South Asian culture for many years. From the groundbreaking Bollywood-inspired remix of 'Me Against the Music' to her recent collaboration with Indian fashion designers Falguni and Shane Peacock on the 'Hold It Against Me' video, she has embraced the incredible sights and sounds of this vibrant community throughout her career."

The original version of "Till the World Ends," the second single from Britney's Femme Fatale album, was produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Billboard. At last look, the tune held the #8 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Are you loving the Bollywood-style "Till the World Ends" remix? Tell us in the comments.

Britney Spears 'Till The World Ends' Bollywood Remix Hits Web

The Femme Fatale singer takes to Twitter to encourage fans to 'check out this incredible ... remix.'

Beyonce Drops Official Version Of 'Run The World (Girls)'

In the first single off her upcoming album, B warns the haters that she's in charge.

Beyoncé dropped the official version of her new single "Run the World (Girls)" on Thursday morning (April 21). The track is just under four minutes of sassy, girl-power lyrics paired with marching-band beats and club appeal.

The song is loud and proud in its relentless message: Beyoncé and girls everywhere are in charge now. B is clearly rallying the troops to her side in this first single off her forthcoming summer album release.

"Girls, we run this motha," she announces at the song's opening. Soon, the beat takes off and looped Auto-Tuned vocals complement Beyoncé's feel-good call and response of "Who run the world? Girls."

The verses that follow sound like a warning to any of the haters. "Some of them men think they freak this like we do/ But no they don't/ Make your checks come at they neck/ Disrespect us, no they won't/ This goes out to all my girls that's in the club rocking the latest/ Who will buy it for themselves and get more money later," Beyoncé sings in a choppy, emphatic style.

"I think I need a barber/ None of these ho's can fight me/ I'm so good with this/ I remind you I'm so 'hood with this," she goes on, before briefly transitioning to smoother, more persuasive, but still boastful vocals.

The song is a cleaned-up version of the demo that leaked earlier this week. It was produced by Switch, Beyoncé and Shea Taylor. Beyoncé also co-wrote the track with The-Dream.

Though there's still no word on when the video might drop, its director, Francis Lawrence, has made it clear that the video (which was teased on Wednesday) will be epic. "It'll be big, it'll probably be one of the bigger Beyoncé music videos ever done," he explained. "And, I can say that I think the song is unbelievable."

Superhumanoids ? Malta (Lesands Remix)

Here’s a super awesome track that I sniped on the twitter recently thanks to our friend @Seraphina_L. Sometimes I know from the very first note that I’m going to be all about a song, which is 100% the case today. Yeah, one note was all it took (well, the first note of actual music outside of the opening a capella vocals). Well, maybe like 3 or 4 because my brain doesn’t process that fast, but the point is, right off the bat this was a winner. Having never heard anything of LA’s Superhumanoidsread more and hear the song

Beyonce No Longer Managed By Father, Mathew Knowles

'I've only parted ways with my father on a business level,' singer says.

Artists cut ties with managers all the time. But when your shot-caller is your dad and he's helped you climb the ladder of fame to the very top, things can be a bit trickier.

After years of rumors, Beyoncé confirmed on Monday that she is parting ways with the man who helped make her an international pop diva: dad Mathew Knowles. According to CNN, the split was amicable and both sides said it was a mutual decision. "I've only parted ways with my father on a business level," Beyoncé, 29, said in a statement released on Monday. "He is my father for life and I love my dad dearly. I am grateful for everything he has taught me ... I grew up watching both he and my mother manage and own their own businesses. They were hardworking entrepreneurs and I will continue to follow in their footsteps."

Mathew Knowles began managing Beyoncé's career when she was a teenager and shepherded her through her mega-success with Destiny's Child in the late 1990s and into her even bigger career as a solo artist, which has garnered her 16 Grammy Awards and millions in sales for her three post-DC albums. Her mother, Tina, is Beyoncé's stylist and is heavily involved in their clothing line, House of Dereon.

"The decision for Beyoncé and Music World Entertainment to part was mutual," Mathew Knowles said in a separate statement also released on Monday. "We did great things together, and I know that she will continue to conquer new territories in music and entertainment."

It was not announced who would take over management duties for Beyoncé, but Knowles said his record label would instead focus on gospel and inspirational artists. "Business is business and family is family," Knowles continued. "I love my daughter and am very proud of who she is and all that she has achieved. I look forward to her continued great success."

Among the artists who are listed on the Music World Entertainment site are Juanita Bynum, From Above, Pastor Rudy, the Bamaz, Beyoncé's younger sister, Solange, and Trin-I-Tee 5:7. Knowles also used to manage former Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, but they parted ways with him, respectively, in 2009 and 2010.

Mathew and Tina Knowles divorced in 2009 after 29 years of marriage. Beyoncé is reportedly close to finishing work on the follow-up to 2008's I Am ... Sasha Fierce, which could include contributions from Sia and Sleigh Bells, along with Ne-Yo, S1, Jim Jonsin, Sean "The Pen" Garrett, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart.

Apple building 'crowd-sourced traffic' service for iPhone users

An interesting bit of information has come out from Apple's announcement today addressing the location-tracking controversy. Apparently Apple is working on a crowd-sourced traffic service for iPhone users. From the press release:

What other location data is Apple collecting from the iPhone besides crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data?

Apple is now collecting anonymous traffic data to build a crowd-sourced traffic database with the goal of providing iPhone users an improved traffic service in the next couple of years.

For a few years now, Apple has been rumored to be beefing up its maps offerings in iOS. In 2009 and 2010 Apple bought both Placebase and Poly9, two companies with map and navigation-oriented products. Then in December of last year, Apple posted job placement openings looking for engineers with "experience developing navigation software" to "deliver the next generation of Apple products."

While today's news of a crowd-sourced traffic database tells us nothing too concrete about Apple's maps plans, it does appear that Apple is gearing up to add turn-by-turn direction and increased real-time accuracy to its future map offerings on iOS. The third-party market for navigation apps is certainly hopping, so it makes sense for Apple to match up with Google's turn-by-turn support, which is baked into Android. (Apple can't do turn-by-turn directions on the existing Maps app, because it uses Google's data, and the licensing agreements covering that data don't permit it.)

So You?re Going to Coachella? 2011 Edition

After months and months of waiting and anticipating, Coachella is finally here. This will be my second (hopefully annual) trip to the festival and I couldn’t be more excited. Our crew has increased from 2 to 7 this year and we will be staying for a few extra days to relax next to the pool and recover from our post-fest haze (I’m equally excited for those 2 days of sun and nothing else as I am for the festival itself).

Last year, I provided a big list of festival advice taken from my experiences at other fests and Iread more and hear the song

Developer gets crash report from device running iOS 5

iOS app developer FutureTap has received a crash report from a device running iOS 5. FutureTap notes the crash involved MKUserLocationBreadCrumb, which 9to5Mac notes is related to the maps/location functions in iOS and could mean these APIs have been altered in iOS 5.

Since Apple is now testing third-party apps with iOS 5, it likely puts the next version of the iPhone's operating system on-track for a public unveiling in June at WWDC. It's still not clear if we'll see iOS 5 released in mid-summer as we have previous major iOS updates, or if Apple will wait until the fall to release iOS 5 alongside updated hardware.

[Video] tUnE-yArDs ? Bizness

So the internet has been abuzz over the new tUnE-yArDs (that is rather annoying to type out over and over) album w h o k i l l. I haven’t listened to it yet, so I don’t have an opinion either way, but I do like the old stuff from the Merrill Garbus led musical endeavor. And I have heard “Bizness” many times now and I dig it. She’s coming to town in a few weeks and it’s pretty much a must-see event in my opinion. So then today I saw this video (probably weeks/years afterread more and hear the song
